Is it really safe to use this tool?
Absolutely. The core principle of this tool is security through privacy. Since your PDF file is never sent to our servers (or any server), there is zero risk of your data being intercepted, stored, or viewed by anyone else. The entire unlocking process happens on your own computer.
How does it work without uploading my file?
We use a technology called WebAssembly to run a powerful PDF processing library (qpdf) directly in your web browser. When you select a file, your browser reads it into its memory, the library decrypts it, and then you can download the result. It's like running a desktop application, but without the installation.
Why do I need to enter a password? I thought this tool removes them.
This is a great question that gets to the heart of how PDF security works. There are two types of passwords:
- Owner Password: This locks permissions like printing, copying, or editing. Our tool can remove this without you entering anything.
- User Password (or "Open Password"): This encrypts the entire file and is required just to view it.
To unlock a PDF, we first need to be able to open it. If your file has a User Password, you must provide it so our tool can decrypt the file. Once decrypted, we then remove all password protections. This gives you a completely unrestricted file that no longer requires a password to open.
This tool does not "crack" or guess unknown passwords.
What if I don't know the password?
This tool is designed to remove password *restrictions* from a PDF that you can already open. If a PDF requires a password just to be viewed (an "open password"), you must provide that password. The tool cannot guess or "crack" unknown passwords, as that would be a security vulnerability.
Are there any limitations?
For practical browser performance, we recommend files under 100MB. The tool works on all modern browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It cannot remove certain enterprise-level DRM protections that are not standard PDF password security.
